Parenting Class for Divorcing Parents ("TransParenting")
This four-hour seminar for divorcing parents with children under age 18 is offered twice per month at Lampion Center. The seminar educates parents about parental and child reactions to divorce, and how to best meet their children’s needs during this difficult emotional transition.
We offer a day-time class the first Thursday of each month from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (4 hours). Evening classes are available the second and third Tuesday of each month (two sessions, two hours each) from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The cost of this program is $45.00.
You can register for classes by calling Lampion Center at 812-471-1776. You will need to provide your name, phone number and court cause number. Following completion of the class, you will receive a certificate of attendance. (If you are divorcing in Vanderburgh County, the county mandates that you attend these classes therefore, as a courtesy, proof of your attendance will be sent to Vanderburgh County Superior Court.
Conflict Resolution Group for middle/high school students ("Responsible Conflict Resolution")
Middle and high school students suspended from school due to anger management issues gain awareness and insight into their choices and behaviors through this interactive, four session program. Emotions, behaviors, and responsibilities come to light, in addition to the consequences of their actions. Students attend an exit conference with their principal and their parents to discuss learning points and expectations. Recommendations are made for additional services that might be helpful.
Teen / Parent Communication Group ("Choices")
Disrespectful behavior, poor choices, and a breakdown in communication put adolescents and their relationship with their parents at-risk. The program uses an interactive, structured approach to the issues and choices parents and teens face. Parents are given tools and skills to effectively communicate with their teens, encourage better behavior, use appropriate discipline techniques and teach responsible habits. Teens gain skills in discerning issues, making appropriate choices related to life goals, and communicating their points in a respectful way. Voluntary and involuntary referrals are accepted.
Family Literacy / Parents as first teachers ("Even Start")
Young parents work toward their GED as their pre-school children thrive in the nursery and pre-school class through this amazing program. Even Start is a federal program designed to help disadvantaged parents obtain their education, enrich their parenting skills and become motivators and teachers for their young children. A Lampion Center case manager assists families in meeting basic needs (housing, food, safety), provides emotional support, and assists with referral to outside resources. The Even Start program is provided through a rich collaboration with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation.
Interactive parenting group ("Nurturing")
This series of weekly interactive groups is for families referred by the Department of Child Services for assistance with parenting skills. Activities are designed to: 1. Increase self awareness of behaviors and emotions; 2. Develop empathetic family responses to these behaviors and emotions; 3. Teach parents appropriate and effective behavior management skills, and 4. Teach an understanding of developmentally appropriate abilities and expectations of children. The Nurturing program is twelve weeks in length.
Parents/Caregivers meeting the needs of abused children
Parents/caregivers of children who have been sexually abused have many questions and often seek support in meeting the needs of their children. Through this series of classes, much information is shared and discussed: The effects of sexual abuse on children and their families, Coping skills of child victims, Facts and myths about sexual abuse, Normal vs. problematic sexual behaviors in children, and Traits of sexual offenders. Prevention strategies (Stewards of Children") are also discussed.
Opportunity and Encouragement for At-risk Teens ("Second Start")
Lampion Center is pleased to offer case management services for at-risk teens through this innovative partnership with Vanderburgh County Juvenile Court. The primary goal is to assist at-risk teens and their families so that the youth will receive the support and skills they need to prevent further legal involvement and stay in school. Teens set goals and receive assistance in problem-solving, relationship-building, and assistance linking to other resources to enhance achievement. Lampion Center case managers are on the move, meeting with teens in their homes, at school, or out in the community, to maximize opportunities to listen, encourage, and shape positive behaviors and a bright future.
